Higgins name was only put on guns through 1941-1962. It could have serial numbers located next to the trigger on the bottom plate, but a magority don't. In any case though you can take the model numbers (examples 583.10, 101.387) and cross reference to find who made it. Then when you have model numbers and production dates you will have a general idea.
I actually found the date of manufacture on my model 50 270win. On the other hand I can only guess on my model 20 because it has no serial #'s.
It was made by High standard and somewhere from 1945-1952. The model 20 will have no serial numbers. After 1957, High Standard made model 20's will have an assembly date code on the barrel in the form of two upper case letters. The Model 20 was made between 1948 and 1962. The Savage 101 was an interesting gun made from 1960-1968. It is made to resemble a single-action revolver but is actually a single-shot; the barrel and cylinder swing out to load the shell and there is no cylinder rotation on firing (there's only one chamber). Not a terribly popular collectable, but does have a place in a comprehensive Savage collection OR makes a good addition to any collection of oddball handguns.
We see these offered for sale fairly often at $150-$195 but they sit and sit and sit. Actual buying prices seem to be in the $100-$125 range.
I would certainly pay no more for one. SAVAGE 3 SERIES Rifle Information-------- n. NThere were several variations of the Savage model 3 rifle made. The basic version is a single shot bolt action,.22RF chambered rifle.
It appears that all variations of the M3 were single shot and that the added model variation such as A, B, C and so forth only denoted minor changes or additions to the rifle. But none included major modifications such as a box or tube magazine. Models included the 3, 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D, 3S, and 3ST. No reference found so far shows any variation of the model 3 rifle having come from the factory with a set trigger as the original answer to the question stated below. NThere is conflicting information as to dates of manufacture. Some references show they were manufactured 1930-47, others 1933-52.
NOne reference that was printed in 1931, listed the M3 as 'new' at that time, with a wholesale price of $3.90, retail $4.85, packed 10 and 25 in a case. Therefore it is reasonable to presume that in fact the first M3s came off of the production line in either 1930 or 31. However, this same reference showed M3s with a 39' over all length, and having a 22' barrel and steel butt plate. The stock pictured is not grooved on the sides.
(This might have been pre-production info). NSome 1931 dated materials show a grooved stock and list a 24' barrel. The barrel length is important in narrowing down when M3s were manufactured. Most references printed recently show that Pre-war (WWII) models have 26' barrels, post-war 24'. This is confusing, as publications from the early 1930s do not reflect this same information, reference above.
